The technological foundation relies on twelve optical high-speed cameras permanently mounted around each stadium bowl. These sensors track skeletal movements of players alongside the ball trajectory at 500 frames per second. According to the partners, the installation captures and evaluates roughly 14 million individual data points per match to build an uninterrupted, spatial representation of pitch action.
A multimodal AI model parses these incoming data feeds to resolve millimeter-level spatial questions. The software computes offside lines with an accuracy down to two centimeters and calculates ball contact points during potential handball incidents with millisecond precision. The objective is to provide on-field and video officials with an immediate evaluation, removing the need for manual line plotting.
The primary operational benefit centers on review duration during Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checks. While previous verification routines for complex offside situations required an average of 72 seconds, the new architecture reduces the processing interval to under four seconds. This drastic time compression directly addresses ongoing criticism from fans and clubs over prolonged match pauses.
This push toward automated officiating systems extends beyond Europe. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on September 10, 2026, that it is outfitting the Mané Garrincha National Stadium in Brasília with camera-based Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT). Following tests during the Série A quarterfinals, the infrastructure is certified for the Copa do Brasil final in December as well as subsequent matches at neutral venues.
Together, these deployments in Europe and South America signal a clear transition away from manual video inspections toward fully automated, algorithmic spatial tracking in elite sports.
