OpenAI has shared details on the operational evolution of Habitat, an infrastructure project supporting its artificial intelligence products. The organization outlined how it "evolved Habitat from a Python library into a globally distributed storage platform" to handle core systems. The architectural shift highlights the backend transformation required to move from initial software packages toward large-scale data systems.
The distributed system now functions under significant operational load. According to OpenAI, the storage platform operates by "serving 1 billion ChatGPT users" across the globe. At the same time, the infrastructure handles an ongoing volume of "22M requests per second" to sustain service demands.
