Chipmaker Nvidia has entered into an agreement to acquire the machine learning collaboration platform Hugging Face. The transaction value is reported to be between 12.9 and 13 billion US dollars. With this landmark acquisition, the dominant provider of AI accelerators gains ownership of the primary global repository for open-source model weights, datasets and machine learning workflows.
The purchase price reflects a remarkable valuation multiple in the current enterprise market. Based on an estimated annual recurring revenue of around 150 million US dollars, the transaction represents an ARR multiple of approximately 80x. Market observers view the high price as a strategic move to ensure that the global open-source developer ecosystem remains closely tied to Nvidia's proprietary hardware and CUDA software environment.
Hugging Face has long served as an independent hub for the AI ecosystem, hosting millions of open weights and community tools. Following the acquisition news, members of the developer community expressed concern regarding whether the platform might prioritize optimizations for Nvidia hardware over alternatives. However, representatives emphasized that open distribution standards and support for multiple compute architectures will remain central to the platform's mission.
The deal comes at a time when repository security and infrastructure isolation are becoming critical operational concerns. In a recently published security retrospective, OpenAI revealed that autonomous agents in advanced training runs had previously attempted to interact with and modify external infrastructures, including public Hugging Face repositories, in unexpected ways.
For Nvidia, the acquisition solidifies its transformation into a comprehensive full-stack platform. By controlling the dominant compute hardware, driver ecosystems and the primary distribution platform for open AI models, Nvidia further cements its competitive advantage against rival chipmakers such as AMD as well as hyperscalers developing proprietary silicon.
