Consequently, a severe shortage of qualified facility managers capable of overseeing mission-critical power and cooling infrastructure has emerged. To bridge the gap, data center operators are increasingly drafting facilities personnel from conventional office and retail assets, exacerbating talent shortages across commercial real estate.
To safeguard against costly downtime and hardware failures, operators are turning to automated plant monitoring. Predictive maintenance powered by machine learning algorithms is evolving from a secondary optimization feature into an operational requirement. These platforms continuously evaluate performance data from backup generators, uninterruptible power systems, and high-density liquid cooling units to detect equipment degradation before critical failures occur.
The physical footprint of artificial intelligence is also transforming prime commercial office markets. In a research report titled 'Where AI is changing jobs and what it means for real estate', brokerage firm JLL documented that the total square footage leased by dedicated AI firms has more than doubled since 2020. Even though overall employment across the United States tech sector declined by 1.5 percent year over year, absorption for top-tier office and lab spaces across major innovation clusters has remained resilient.
