Ahead of the US Open, technology provider IBM and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) have unveiled new analytical tools powered by the watsonx platform. The partnership aims to elevate both on-court sports science data collection and the digital fan experience for a global audience. Central to this year's technical additions is the introduction of granular biomechanical assessments generated directly during tournament matches.
The core technical feature is a newly designed metric titled Serve Quality. This capability leverages computer vision and spatial tracking to capture the precise movement patterns of players during their serve. The system tracks 21 anatomical joint points on each athlete at a rate of 50 frames per second.
From these high-frequency measurements, the artificial intelligence model assesses eight distinct phases of serve biomechanics in real time. Tracked variables include knee flexion during the preparation phase, exact shoulder rotation during the backswing, and racket acceleration at the point of impact. Coaches and broadcasters gain access to standardized, quantitative data points on the kinetic efficiency and power generation of individual serves.
Beyond athlete performance tracking, IBM and the USTA are broadening automated editorial tools across their digital channels. The platform produces generative match reports seconds after a contest concludes, highlighting critical inflection points and key moments. This feature is supplemented by Match Chat, an interactive interface that answers fan inquiries regarding live match metrics and historical context.
The deployment reflects a broader industry movement toward merging elite sports analytics with real-time fan engagement. By processing computer vision data and spatial metrics instantaneously, tournament organizers provide audiences with direct visibility into physical and tactical details that were previously limited to specialized coaching staff.
