At the IBC 2026 industry trade show in Amsterdam, Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), announced a fundamental technological transition ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Exarchos explained that traditional sports broadcasting has reached a turning point where conventional production models cannot handle upcoming content volumes. With 36 sports and more than 14,000 hours of live coverage scheduled for LA28, scaling the broadcast without cloud virtualization and automated intelligence is no longer feasible.
The strategy for the Los Angeles Games places a strong emphasis on generative tools and automated video-cutting artificial intelligence. These solutions are specifically intended to cater to changing viewer habits. According to OBS data, casual viewers represent more than 50 percent of the worldwide Olympic audience. To retain this segment, the production team plans to deploy real-time systems that automatically generate short clips, personalized highlights and visual explanations to help non-experts understand complex athletic rules.
At the same event, a consortium of major media organizations and technology providers demonstrated how automated directing is moving into active deployment. Under the framework of the IBC Accelerator Innovation Programme, a team led by ITV, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Astro Malaysia showcased their joint project titled Agentic AI Orchestration and meCast. The live demonstration revealed how autonomous software agents can assume live operational duties during ongoing sporting events.
The system uses autonomous agents to manage live switcher decisions, select camera angles, and mix sound according to individual user preferences. Through the meCast framework, viewers can receive customized streams tailored to their specific interests, moving away from a uniform feed broadcast to millions simultaneously. In addition to tailored viewing perspectives, the system supports real-time commentary localization, adjusting audio tracks dynamically based on the viewer profile.
Together, the announcements from OBS and the IBC accelerator team demonstrate a decisive shift across the sports broadcasting landscape. Whether managing thousands of broadcast hours for LA28 or generating tailored feeds for individual mobile users, automated software pipelines are becoming indispensable infrastructure. Broadcasters are turning to artificial intelligence not just to control production costs, but to address fragmented viewer expectations and deliver accessible content at massive scale.
