Spotify has announced new rules for handling synthetic music on its platform. Starting in mid September 2026, the streaming service is launching a new labeling system for AI-generated artist profiles and playlist entries. Accounts that are not based on real human musicians will be explicitly flagged for users. The platform specifically cited the AI project Velvet Sundown as an example of such virtual entities.
The most significant impact of this update affects the platform's recommendation algorithms. Profiles marked with the AI Persona or Likely AI Persona label will be excluded by default from personalized recommendation features such as Discover Weekly. As a result, synthetic music projects lose direct access to automated playlists generated for millions of listeners. The routine automated surge in streams driven by the platform's algorithm is effectively cut off for these accounts.
This policy shift follows an ongoing wave of fake artists and deepfake music flooding the platform. Spotify is acting in response to growing industry pressure and criticism from established music professionals. The primary objective is to prevent AI shadow accounts from siphoning stream royalties away from real human creators. Many traditional musicians had expressed deep concern over shrinking royalty pools due to the sheer volume of machine-generated tracks.
To identify synthetic accounts, the streaming giant relies on a multi-pronged verification process. The system combines voluntary self-disclosure by uploaders, automated AI detection tools, and manual reviews conducted by human editorial staff. This layered approach aims to ensure that unflagged shadow accounts are accurately identified over time. Final human oversight is intended to minimize false positives and misclassifications across the catalog.
By adopting these new guidelines, Spotify is putting industry-driven proposals into direct operational practice. On July 22, the international Recording Industry Coalition had proposed a two-tiered voluntary labeling system for AI-generated audio content. Spotify is now among the first major streaming services to implement these standards across its entire platform. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the governance and regulation of generative AI within digital music streaming.
