On September 3, 2026, German digital association Bitkom published a comprehensive survey on the IT labor market based on a representative sample of 853 companies with three or more employees. The findings indicate a significant turning point in reported tech vacancies across Germany. Currently, around 79,000 IT positions remain unfilled nationwide, representing a drop of roughly 47 percent from the peak recorded in 2023. At that time, companies reported approximately 149,000 vacancies, a figure that stood at 109,000 in 2025. Beyond general economic headwinds, the accelerating adoption of software automation is curbing hiring needs.
Automation is directly influencing corporate workforce strategies. Among companies that are actively cutting personnel or leaving openings unfilled, 35 percent state that artificial intelligence is already directly replacing these open positions. This shift is occurring in day-to-day operations rather than remaining an experimental trial. In 42 percent of surveyed IT departments, generative AI and programming assistants are already deployed in standard operations. An additional 36 percent plan to integrate such tools soon, meaning more than three quarters of organizations are adopting or actively preparing for automated coding support.
The broad adoption of coding tools is fundamentally altering hiring requirements for software professionals. Exactly 50 percent of surveyed firms no longer search for dedicated, isolated AI specialists. Instead, they require proficiency in generative coding and process automation as a mandatory baseline skill for regular software developers. Programmers are now expected to write, test, and maintain code in tandem with automated systems. Those unable to integrate modern assistants into their workflows face a shrinking share of accessible vacancies.
Despite the sharp drop in overall job vacancies, the hiring market for experienced personnel remains exceptionally tight. A striking 78 percent of surveyed companies continue to report severe bottlenecks when searching for highly skilled senior developers and software architects. While language models reliably accelerate repetitive coding, boilerplate production, and simple scripts, they remain incapable of making autonomous architectural decisions. Consequently, employers are concentrating resources on experienced specialists capable of designing and validating complex infrastructure.
The Bitkom survey highlights a structural realignment rather than a temporary hiring dip. The decline from 149,000 unfilled roles down to 79,000 within three years demonstrates how quickly software assistants can replace entry-level programming tasks. At the same time, the demands placed on architectural oversight and system reliability are growing rapidly. For technical talent and employers alike, competitive advantage is no longer determined by team size, but by the ability to manage hybrid development workflows effectively.
