Apple has officially notified music distributors and record labels about a new policy for its streaming platform Apple Music. The company is implementing mandatory labeling for music created with generative artificial intelligence. The move addresses the rapid surge of synthetic songs entering digital streaming catalogues.
Under the newly established rules, distributors will be required to provide AI Transparency Tags within the metadata. This tagging becomes mandatory whenever a material portion of a track has been generated synthetically or through an AI service. The workflow is designed to ensure that the origin of each track is documented accurately before distribution to the platform.
For listeners on Apple Music, the tagged tracks will become explicitly visible across the interface later this year. Applicable releases will display the label 'Made With AI'. The objective is to provide subscribers with full clarity regarding whether a track was created by human artists or algorithmic systems.
The decision comes in response to a massive influx of AI-generated content across streaming services. According to internal estimates and industry figures, synthetic or automated uploads now account for more than one-third of the daily upload volume on some platforms. This volume poses structural challenges for catalogue curation and royalty systems.
By rolling out this transparency requirement, Apple aligns itself with a broader industry trend toward provenance tracking and clear disclosure for digital media. The policy sends a strong signal to producers and record labels that synthetic content in entertainment ecosystems will require standard verification and disclosure going forward.
