The role of referees in international elite sports is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Decisions that once relied solely on human perception on the field are now supported by a highly complex network of sensors and artificial intelligence. At the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, a significantly expanded generation of Semi-Automated Offside Technology will be deployed to deliver faster and more accurate offside decisions than ever before.
In cooperation with technology partners such as Lenovo and Hawk-Eye, 16 optical tracking cameras will be installed in each tournament stadium. Combined with a specialized sensor inside the ball, known as the Connected Ball, the system tracks 29 specific body points per player. This comprehensive data capture enables continuous real-time calculation of all player positions across the pitch.
A major innovation introduced for the 2025 and 2026 cycle is the creation of precise digital avatars generated from 3D scans of all participating athletes. During tight offside calls, the generated audio signal is now transmitted directly to the assistant referee's headset rather than remaining solely inside the video assistant room. This shift minimizes delayed whistles and substantially reduces the risk of injury during prolonged plays.
The technological upgrades at the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup also include stabilized bodycams for match officials. These RefCams are worn directly by referees. Purpose-built AI algorithms eliminate motion blur during high-speed sprints in real time, giving broadcast viewers and tactical analysts a crystal-clear perspective from the official's vantage point.
In professional tennis, a similar revolution is taking place. Across the ATP Tour and at Wimbledon, human line judges have been phased out in favor of the AI-powered Electronic Line Calling system known as Hawk-Eye Live. This fully automated technology reduces human error on boundary calls down to fractions of a millimeter, ensuring seamless play.
