Following extensive test phases in prior years, automated decision systems have now become a firmly established standard across the world's leading leagues and tournaments. Particularly in ball sports such as football and tennis, optical camera systems and machine learning models are replacing human error at critical boundaries.
The English Premier League rolled out semi-automated offside technology across all matches in the spring of the 2025/2026 season. The system relies on advanced computer vision solutions provided by Genius Sports. The Brazilian Football Confederation, known as CBF, has likewise adopted this technology for its 2026 season to minimize officiating errors during close offside calls in national league matches.
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the technology is being deployed on an even larger scale. A total of 12 high-speed cameras in each stadium capture the skeleton data of players at a frame rate of 50 frames per second. Through this continuous tracking, decision times for video assistant referees are reduced by an average of 30 seconds, noticeably enhancing the flow of the game.
Tennis is undergoing a historic shift in rule enforcement as well. Since the 2025 season, the ATP Tour has utilized Electronic Line Calling Live across all court surfaces, including clay, hard courts, and grass. Following 147 years of tradition, the world-famous Wimbledon tournament replaced human line judges across all courts with an automated camera system starting in 2025.
The widespread transition to AI-assisted systems highlights the growing acceptance of digital tools in high-stakes sports officiating. Governing bodies expect this shift to yield greater objectivity and eliminate costly officiating mistakes. At the same time, the technology significantly reduces match interruption times, benefitting athletes and spectators alike.
